GR11 Day 1 Trekking Begins
So today was our first day on the GR11 from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea. We have put in a respectable 24k according to Jac's watch but my body is telling me it is more like 50k. In fact el toootises wanted to give up a good couple of hours ago but we had no water to cook our delicious dried pasta with, and despite being able to hear the woodland stream we couldn't get to it without a machete and full body bramble protection. So we're forced to plod on.
The guide book promised we would pass a clear flowing woodland stream so we were optimistic about an early finish. However as I have said before guide books lie and this one is no different it appears.
Tonight we have stopped in the chapel of Ermita de St Anton, we have running water and a sheltered seating area which is handy as it's now raining. I'm voting to stay here under the church veranda for the night, church's are after all supposed to provide refuge and if anyone asks me to shift I will just practice my favourite Spanish phrase which is " lo sentimos, no me habla espanol y mi amigo es muda"
Which means, I'm sorry I don't speak Spanish and my friend is a mute.
Things I have learnt:
3 months lying on a beach, and not doing very much maybe fun, but it is not the best training for a 2 month hike across the Pyrenees. Neither is stuffing your face, as you will have to haul that heavy lump up some big mountains and it will wobble a lot.
Things I have lost:
Mug and bowl beautiful titanium pieces of lightweight camping equipment. Gone and they didn't even make the start of the trek, they are either languishing under a bench in Madrid bus station. Or they are In hiding at Casa Limon, given up before the start. I am now using a lime green mug and aqua blue bowl in lightish plastic, hopefully the bright colours will prevent me from losing them.
Jac has some new baps.,
I have convinced jac to go for a rucksack like Barbara, as it is amazing. We have named her new bag, Barbarella because she is a newer model, slightly slimmer at the hips and her baps are apparently more pert and in better condition than mine. Which are old, droopy and damaged.
