GR5 Day 9 - Don't Look Down
Les Contamines to Petit Berge Refuge
We put in a 27km day today and we are still functioning .... Just, a chilly start had us walking in the shade for 3 hours until the sun found the valleys and us and the shade of blue faded from our legs, we are still insistent on wearing shorts which is madness as its baltic and our accessories are gloves and hats, not your normal short wearing attire, again snow should really give it away but we keep putting them on in the vain hope it will be warmer than it is.
So we climbed over the col du Bonhomme today and then along this fantastic ridge line of the Crete des Gittes not for those with a vertigo issue, you shouldn't cross this ridge of there are strong winds, there were strong winds from up front but they were the none metrological ones !
The views have been amazing today as there has been blue sky , we even saw some wild life in the shape of we think either 4 large eagles or 4 vultures .... They were big whatever they were, maybe the ridge line is a good place to pick up the odd clumsy hiker that has slipped off the edge.
Tonight's wild camp is on a jaunty angled slope, shall we say so no doubt a lot of the night will be spent sliding down the air bed, the cows a clanging on the hill above us and we have feasted on cheesy pasta and Chorizo, we have supped the last of the alcohol and have had our rationed qty of m&ms ... Got to make them last ... The sunset was beautiful and all is well with our world here ... And as long as the cows stay on there side of the track we should be fine.
Things that you don't want to happen.
You do not want to be halfway up a mountain only to realise that you have left your spare pants drying on a rock, a long way down, I was tempted to leave them but when you only have 2 pairs for the trip .... Browns spreadsheet only allocated 2 pairs you kind of need to go collect them ..
You also do not want to extract said pants from under the left buttock of a French man that has inadvertently sat on them.
You do not want to go for an alfresco wee and surprise a grasshopper by peeing on him, they can jump quite high when surprised.
You do not want to be a geek that has lost 1.3 gb of data, this makes a very depressed geek, apparently it's the mapping apps that are doing it so they have been switched off ... It's anyone's guess where we could end up tomorrow!
-Les Contanimes- just past Petit Berge
Wild camping past the abandoned refuge.
And what a view!
